Outrage Over Mob Killings: Tinubu Demands Swift Justice for Murdered Travelers in Edo

In a shocking incident that has drawn national condemnation, President Bola Tinubu has ordered security agencies to immediately identify and apprehend those responsible for the brutal killing of several travelers in Edo State. The victims were reportedly attacked by a mob in Uromi while en route from Port Harcourt to northern Nigeria.

Expressing his outrage, President Tinubu labeled the killings “dastardly” and underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation into the violence that unfolded on Thursday. Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, conveyed the president's sentiments on Friday, emphasizing that “jungle justice has no place in Nigeria.” He affirmed the fundamental right of all Nigerians to travel freely across the country without fear.

In a statement, Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the victims, reassuring them that justice would not be compromised: "Criminals will not be allowed to shed the blood of innocent Nigerians in vain."

In the wake of the incident, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo visited the affected region to express his condemnation of the mob action, which he described as “baric.” His spokesman, Fred Itua, reported that the governor has called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings.

“The Governor has directed the State Police Command and other security agencies to conduct thorough and expedited investigations, ensuring those responsible are held accountable,” Itua stated. He also encouraged community members to cooperate with authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

During his visit, Governor Okpebholo praised community leaders, particularly those from the Arewa community, for their efforts to defuse the situation and promote restraint. He reiterated that there is "no excuse for vigilante groups to take the law into their own hands" when statutory law enforcement agencies are available to handle such matters.

As the investigation unfolds, the nation awaits tangible actions that demonstrate a commitment to justice and the protection of citizens' rights in the face of rising mob violence.
